About Seattle Plone Bootcamp
Seattle Plone Bootcamp is an intensive, week-long "immersion course" in Plone, and is one of the most effective ways to get up to speed on Plone quickly. At Seattle Plone Bootcamp, you'll gain a solid working knowledge of:
- How to customize the look and feel of Plone
- How to develop new content types for Plone
- How to develop new products, features and functions for Plone
You'll leave Seattle Plone Bootcamp with the ability to dive in and start doing great web projects with Plone. Seattle Plone Bootcamp also offers the opportunity to plug into the growing network of Plone consultants and developers here in the Pacific Northwest.
Seattle Plone Bootcamp Agenda
- Day One: Power Using and Customizing Plone
- Day Two: Zope Page Templates
- Day Three: Scripting Plone & Making Simple Apps
- Day Four: Building Content Types
- Day Five: Security, Relational Databases, and Development Practices
The class is taught "downward", moving from highest conceps to lower-level stuff. So it's appropriate for someone who wants to just launch a simple Plone site to come for the first two days, or first three days to learn some basic scripting. It's not okay, however, to come later in the week, as the stuff later in the week relies on concepts taught earlier.
About the Instructor
Plone Bootcamp is taught by Joel Burton, Board Chair of the Plone Foundation and independent Plone developer. Joel's one of the Plone community's best trainers and speakers and is a damn nice guy, too.

Invite Someone Else
As
described above, registration for Seattle Plone Bootcamp is currently
invite-only. If you know of someone we ought to invite, drop Andrew Burkhalter
with a name, email, and brief sentence introducing whoever you want to
invite (priority will be given to people based in Seattle or who are
doing projects for the nonprofit sector.) Registration will open
to the general public on January 20th.
Some other Interesting Activities Happening in Seattle (More Incentives)
Seattle Plone Bootcamp is being held the week after the 2006 NTEN Nonprofit Technology Conference, which is here in Seattle on March 22-24. Our friends at Aspiration are also planning a Penguin Day
open-source networking event for Saturday, March 25. So if you're
a nonprofit open-source web developer (or want to become one), Seattle
is where you want to be in late March.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the prequisites for Seattle Plone Bootcamp?
In past classes Joel's taught (bootcamp or otherwise), the requirements for students have been:
- Have installed Zope/Plone on their own machines
- Know basic Python
- Level of knowledge you'd get from working through Dive Into Python
- Need to understand Python syntax, indentation, and basic "expressiveness" (ie, how to say things "take a string, and add another string to it, and try to convert it to an integer"
- Know HTML/CSS
- Guru-level knowledge here isn't needed, but trying to learn Zope Page Templates and HTML at the same time isn't feasible.
Other skills are beneficial, like having a basic understanding of
relational databases, and how web forms work, etc., but these haven't
been required in the past.
What will I eat? (I hear Seattle is full of plant-worshipping vegetarians.)
We plan to cater some basic box lunches that will likely consistent
of sandwichs, chips, fruit, drink, and cookie. Lunch is also
included in the $300 course entry fee, but you'll be on your own for
dinner. There are many cheap, fancy, ethnic, and tasty options within
walking distince of the training.
At no point will you be forced to eat vegetarian. Nor will you be forced to eat animals.
What are the lodging options?
The
Center for Urban Horticulture is located right on the edge of the
University District of Seattle. There are plenty of hotels and
even hostels within walking and busing distance. We'll provide
links to options over the next couple of days. We also may be
able to coordinate lodging with some of the convenors and local
attendees, so there's a chance you won't have to pay anything.
How do I get to the University of Washington?
Tons
of buses get you from anywhere in Seattle to the University
District. Once you know where you're staying, start putting the
Seattle Metro's trip planner to use.
How do I get to Seattle from the airport? (Are you guys ever gonna get light rail built?)
The #194 bus is quite speedy at travelling from the airport to downtown for only $1.50.
Is there a listserv for this event?
To subscribe/unsubscribe from the coordination listserv, send email to sympa@onenw.org with the subject "SUBSCRIBE seattlebootcamp2006" or "UNSUBSCRIBE seattlebootcamp2006" depending on your intentions. You can also subscribe, unsubscribe and read the list archives online.
I have more questions -- who can I ask?
If you have other questions, you send an email over to Andrew Burkhalter, Jon Stahl, or Brian Gershon. Preferably whoever you like best.
How will I spend away five lonely nights in Seattle?
The
more accurate question is ... what can't you do in Seattle? There
are tons of good Seattle tourism sites just a Google away. In
addition, we'll plan to coordinate a social event on at least one of
the evenings and hope to invite any of those folks from the Seattle
Plone community that aren't able to attend.
